“We have approved the Lapland project and have treated it with care. I would emphasize three ideas that are the cornerstone of this document: traditions as the backbone <…>, reasonable ambition <…> and becoming a ‘smart organization”.

NSDF forum

The forum is planned to be held on September 27 – 30, 2020. The experts from Canada, the USA, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland are expected to participate.

"The main topic of the Northern Sustainable Development Forum 2020 is the development of transport infrastructure in the North and the Arctic. The forum will focus on the north-eastern sector of the Arctic, where global changes are taking place, requiring comprehensive interdisciplinary research with the participation of the international expert community," reports Mikhail Prisiazhnyi, representative of the organizing committee, head of the Department of Northern Studies of the North-Eastern Federal University.

“It must also be considered that the bulk of permafrost is located here, and the climate change in this region is affecting the global warming,” he said.

The organizers hope that the Northern Sustainable Development Forum will become one of the leading global platforms for discussing the problems and prospects of sustainable development of the North and the Arctic. Particular attention will be paid to the possibilities of the Northern Sea Route for the benefit of many countries of the world.

The organizers of the forum are the government of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia), the international non-governmental organization The Northern Forum and North-Eastern Federal University named after M.K. Ammosov. It is expected that leading experts from eight Arctic and non-Arctic states with an interest in sustainable development of the North and the Arctic (Russia, Canada, USA, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland) will participate.

The first Northern Sustainable Development Forum was held in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia) in 2019, where scientists, representatives of international organizations and diplomatic corps from 14 countries took part.
