International professional competencies for students studying professions of traditional branches of the North will be developed by the end of this year. It was reported by Olga Timofeeva-Tereshkina, acting executive director of the Secretariat of the international non-governmental organization "Northern Forum".
Professional competencies will be developed within the framework of a new thematic network of the University of the Arctic (UArctic). The development of them is supported by the Northern Forum and the International Center for Reindeer Husbandry. "Thematic network of the UArctic is being created as part of the “Arctic Skills” to train professional personnel for the northern regions. The Arctic College of Northern Peoples, which is situated in Nizhnekolymsky District, will become the basic educational institution of this network in the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). The Arctic College of Northern Peoples trains personnel with secondary vocational education for traditional branches of the North - reindeer herders, coastal fishermen.
According to Olga Timofeeva-Tereshkina, that thematic network will determine standards for professionals in the traditional sectors. "It is expected that professional competitions will be held on the model of the WorldSkills movement. That thematic network will increase the prestige of reindeer husbandry. The goal is to attract the northern youth. In addition, it will provide opportunities for experience exchange and help to organize internships in the Arctic regions of Russia and abroad "- said the acting executive director of the Northern Forum Secretariat.
The University of the Arctic (UArctic) is a cooperative network of universities, colleges, research institutes and other organizations concerned with education and research in and about the North.
UArctic builds and strengthens collective resources and collaborative infrastructure that enables member institutions to better serve their constituents and their regions. Through cooperation in education, research and outreach we enhance human capacity in the North, promote viable communities and sustainable economies, and forge global partnerships.
