Indigenous people tent in Yamalo Nenets Autonomous Okrug, Russia

SM Pilyasov

«People who go to the North, to the Arctic with a glint in their eyes, with the energy of youth, with optimism, with a culture of optimism, they are certainly more successful than their peers who stay. Because career opportunities in the North, in the Arctic, are many times greater. This was the case in Soviet times, and it remains the case today».

Today, we held our third online meeting with the Chair of the Northern Forum, Governor of Lapland, Mika Riipi. At the very beginning of the meeting, Mr. Riipi shared an extraordinarily pleasant news: a new Coordinator from Lapland – Mrs. Arja Haikara – is soon going to join the Northern Forum. Mrs. Haikara has extensive experience in international organizations, and is quite fluent in Russian. We look forward to meeting her!

Together we discussed many points related to the threshold of the 3rd Northern Sustainable Development Forum. Unfortunately, Mr. Riipi is unable to participate offline in the upcoming Forum’s events, but he is certainly willing to participate online.

We also discussed other interesting events that would soon take place in the near future such as the meeting with representatives of Canada on September 2, the Youth Eco Forum on September 29 – October 7, and the Arctic Spirit Conference in Rovaniemi on November 16-17.

At the end of the meeting, all the participants expressed a wish to necessarily meet in person as soon as possible since no technology, no matter how easier it makes our life, can replace real-life communication.

We are very grateful to dear Mika Riipi for having such a democratic approach towards the need to discuss the vital problems of the Northern Forum at personal and exceptionally pleasant meetings!
